Additives for printing inks
Complexing agents are chemical compounds that are able to form stable compounds (complexes) with metal ions. These compounds are important in many areas of chemistry and industry. In the printing ink industry they are used for the following reasons:
- Stabilization of colour pigments: Complexing agents such as EDTA are used to bind metal ions that could affect the stability and color fastness of pigments. They prevent the precipitation of pigments and help to maintain the homogeneity of printing inks.
- Improved durability: Binding metal ions extends the shelf life of inks by minimizing chemical reactions that could lead to a deterioration in color quality.
- Complexing agents ensure a retardation in the drying process and prevention form toning and pilling in the offset printing process
- Water-based inks: Especially in water-based inks, complexing agents play an important role as they neutralize the effect of water hardness ions (such as calcium and magnesium) that could affect the stability and performance of the inks.
The complicated name is Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid Disodium salt or just EDTA-Na2. The brand name ist PRINTPLEX®.
